Once "Lacus Sabatinus", 160 m above mean sea level, with a basin of 150 sq km, a water surface of nearly 57 sq km, a circular perimeter of 32 km and a depth of 165 m, Lake Bracciano, of volcanic origin, is the second largest lake in the region and the eighth  major lake of Italy.

Located some 35 km North-West of Rome, the lake resulted out of intense and prolonged volcanic activities (from 600,000 to 40,000 years ago) with many small volcanoes in the area: the huge magma chamber collapsed at the end and thus created the so called "caldera", now water filled.

Three charming small towns border Lake Bracciano: Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano. Within just over half an hour by train, bus or car you can reach from here  down town Rome, the international airports of Fiumicino (FCO) “Leonardo da Vinci” and Ciampino (CIA), the beaches of the Mediterranean and the ski runs of the Apennines...

Also Manziana, Oriolo Romano, Monterosi and Sutri face its basin.

The lake is one of the most important natural assets and tourist attractions near Rome: since motorboats are strictly forbidden the lake is one of the cleanest of  Europe and it serves as a drinking water reservoir for the Capital.

In addition to this the lake and its surroundings are strictly protected as a Regional Natural Park - "Parco Regionale Naturale del Complesso Lacuale di Bracciano e Martignano".

The "Monti Sabatini" territory is well known for the beauty of its nature and landscape, its historic, cultural, archaeological  and artistic heritage: the lake is totally surrounded by forests, olive groves, wineyards and gardens.

The historic Bracciano rises on a hill already inhabited by the Etruscans, but the history of the town is closely connected to the magnificent Castle Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the most important of Italy, built 1470-1485, visited by King Charles VIII of France, Pope Sixtus IV, Marcantonio Colonna and Queen Cristina  of Sweden.

In more recent times the Castle has been also visited by John John Kennedy and Tina Turner, while Eros Ramazzotti - Michelle Hunziker, Christiane Amanpour - Jamie Rubin and Tom Cruise - Katie Holmes celebrated here their weddings.

Lake Bracciano is best for a number of sport activities: swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, dragon boat paddling and diving.

On the shores of Lake Bracciano several important museums, like the Historical Italian Air Force Museum, Vigna di Valle, the "La Marmotta" Neolithic Settlement Museum, Anguillara Sabazia, and the Etruscan Archeological Museum, Trevignano Romano.

Gastronomic specialties of the area: dishes based on fish from the lake, "maremmana" steak, "porchetta", wild boar dishes, fresh "broccoletti" and mushrooms to be accompanied by local white and red wines.
